Tip of the Week

Who's your
best fish'n buddy?
Joel Stokka - Pro
StaffTo keep your
trolling motor in peak running
condition, it needs regular
maintenance. Follow these tune-up
tips, and your electric will long
be one of your best fishin
buddies.
1. Remove the prop
to check for tangled fishing
line. It can cut and quickly
damage seals and make the motor
work harder, which robs the
battery, or batteries, of power.
2. Check the blades for cracks,
chips and nicks. If you find any,
file them out or replace the prop
to avoid vibration and noise.
3. Routinely tighten the nuts,
bolts and other hardware on the
mounting bracket. Dont be
the one who watches in horror as
the trolling motor belly flops
overboard on rough water.
4. Unplug your trolling motor
from the power source when
youre finished for the day.
If the motor is accidentally
turned on overnight and no one
notices, it can overheat and
cause a fire. Similarly, never
recharge your battery with the
power cord still connected.
5. Never run your trolling motor
with the head out of the water.
The hotter a motor runs, the more
power it uses. More importantly,
quality electric motors feature
large, internal brushes, bearings
and gears that are designed to be
kept cool by water. For the same
reasons, dont overwork your
motor in dense, choking weeds or
mud, or run it for long periods
of time at full speed.
